Transparency

Luke Duncan King is a Naarm (Melbourne) based artist and collaborator, whose practice is grounded in printmaking & drawing, but extends into video, performance and other artforms. His work is often concerned with highlighting and breaking down assumptions, and power dynamics. Luke was Next Wave Kickstart artist in 2017, holding an experiential exhibition, exploring power and hearing people’s assumptions about lipreading.. Highlight exhibitions include the Maragret Lawrence Gallery, City of Melbourne Library and internationally at 3331 Arts Chiyoda,Tokyo, Japan in 2014. He has co-created works with choreographers, dancers, performers, filmmakers and other visual artists to discover performance and audience experientially, and encounter the artistic practice in a visceral and insightful way. He works extensively with Anna Seymour as part of Skin, Delta Projects, and SPIN, and MINI SPIN in partnership with City of Darebin and Melbourne Fringe 2019. He also works regularly with Louella May Hogan, Jodee Mundy Collaborations, Nicola Gunn and Fayen D'Evie.Luke is a co-founder with Geoff Riding of Magic Hands, which teaches Deaf-led classes in beginner and intermediate Auslan. Luke completed a BFA (Hons) at the VCA in 2015 where he was awarded both the Garry Grossbard Drawing Award, and William Ballantyne Memorial Award.
When I sat next to the large window, I saw a lot of things illuminate on a shiny surface of glass window opposite to me. The transparency is a metaphor of a human portrait during reflection of the lockdown. A group of layers represents the many patterns and shapes inside the human’s head.
